A Therapist in Littlehampton — About Me
Hello, my name is Fran, and I'm a psychotherapist and counsellor based in Littlehampton.
I have over 25 years experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My career started by running groups in the local community in 1987. Over several years I then went on to train as an addiction counsellor, then as a psychodynamic counsellor and eventually as a psychotherapist. I am registered with the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy), and am a member of the Guild of Psychotherapists and the Solent Group for Psychotherapists and Counsellors.
Wide working experience
My career has included setting up and managing community counselling services, the delivery of clinical services overall, and the resolution of work related conflict.
My work has covered London and the south east, Kent and East Sussex and more recently West Sussex. Currently I work in private practice and as a Psychological Therapist for a local charity. I have a particular interest in the link between the mind and the body, and how emotional distress may appear as physical symptoms. I'm also interested in the impact of our early experience on our lives as adults — but that does not mean you have to talk about your past.
How counselling and psychotherapy work
You will bring what is important to you at the time. I work by listening to what you bring. I may ask you a question to help me understand or I might make a suggestion. You are free to agree or disagree with anything I say. Hopefully you might occasionally find it helpful, either way it is your session and I am there to support you and help you find a way forward.
Some clients, especially those who have suffered trauma, may not be helped sufficiently by talking therapies alone because patterns of distress are held in the body as well as the mind. Energy therapies explore additional procedures to help release the patterns of distress and my training in EFT/Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique) enables me to use this procedure as part of the therapy if it might be useful — more details on my Counselling page.
As well as offering counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples I also provide training analysis for students and clinical and work related supervision. Have a look at my Supervision page to find out more.
Therapy in Littlehampton
At Therapy in Littlehampton I work with whatever might be on your mind. Sessions may be very short term, or open ended. The sort of difficulties people experience are things like depression, anxiety, abuse, bereavement, relationship difficulties, stress, low self esteem, workplace issues, and many other personal and emotional problems. Depression is a particularly common problem and is often combined with anxiety. It can feel very isolating and can prevent you getting on with your day to day life. I've written more about this on the Depression page. Some people may not be able to identify what's wrong, but just talk about feeling dissatisfied or unhappy. It doesn't matter if you can't quite put it into words. I work with you as you are, for as long as you want. In addition to face to face sessions I also offer sessions by telephone and Skype.
